Fireworks are the best way to start, or end, a celebration whether it’s Christmas, New Year, or the Fourth of July. Most dogs, however, will completely disagree that fireworks are fun.

The smell, flashing lights, and loud sounds that come from fireworks could all trigger your dog’s anxiety. If you have a new pup and are unsure how they’ll react to fireworks, it’s best to play it safe and prepare ahead just in case. Dogs who don’t cope well with thunderstorms are likely to be afraid of fireworks as well.

Here’s what to do to calm your anxious dog:

1. Keep your dog away from fireworks.
   It goes without saying, but never take your dog to see a fireworks show. Take him indoors so he can feel safer and calm down a little.

2. Set up a safe space for your dog indoors.
   Create a calm environment inside your home for your dog away from the windows. A basement is an ideal place for your dog during fireworks.

3. Play white noise in the background.
   Turn on the white noise machine if you have one or turn up the TV’s volume to drown out the sounds of the fireworks.

4. Comfort your dog with your presence.
   If you can, sit beside your dog or place him on your lap. Your presence will assure your dog that everything will be alright and can help him calm down.

5. Play fireworks sound beforehand to desensitize your dog.
   Before the day of the celebration, try playing fireworks sounds to your dog to get him used to it. That way, he wouldn’t be as shocked by the real sounds.

6. Consider taking your dog to the vet.
   If your dog’s anxiety seems to be severe and unusual, it might be best to talk to your vet about it. Your vet can provide medication and treatment tips to soothe your dog’s anxiety.

Before you get your hands full with the holiday preparations, make sure your best buddy is well taken care of. All your family members should feel safe and happy on such a special day, after all.
